Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of 104 active compounds known as cannabinoids found in the psychoactive cannabis plant and the non-psychoactive hemp plants.

CBD products may be made from hemp or cannabis. Both hemp and cannabis are considered Cannabis sativa by genus and specific, but the similarities end there. Hemp has been cultivated for the past few thousand years for a variety of uses such as food, clothing, fiber and fuel. Hemp contains many naturally occuring active compounds called phytocannabinoids, of which CBD is just one. Cannabis on the other hand is primarily cultivated for it’s primary phytocannabinoid, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

All Artemis gifts are products that are hemp-derived, meaning that our CBD oil is extracted only from the flowers and leaves of hemp plants. Hemp plants at most produce less than 0.3% Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, essentially making it impossible to feel any psychoactive effects or “high”.

The ECS was only recently discovered in the 1990s when scientists were studying how THC, the psychoactive substance in the cannabis plant, affects the human body. What they discovered during this process was a complex network of receptors known as CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are located in the brain and central nervous system. They interact with and perfectly fit the THC molecule. The fact that CB1 receptors interact with THC molecules and are located in the brain might explain why THC produces a psychoactive effect. CB2 receptors on the other hand, reside in the immune system, gut and many of the body’s major organs. CB2 receptors match and interact with the CBD molecule.

This vital system helps fine-tune some of our most vital physiological functions, bringing into balance everything from sleep, appetite and pain to inflammation, memory, mood and reproduction. It helps to moderate all of these systems together so that no one system overpowers or drowns out the other.

Signs Your Endocannabinoid System Isn’t Functioning Properly

Some signs that your ECS may not be functioning properly and may need to come back into balance include:

  • You have an oversensitivity to pain with conditions such as fibromyalgia, IBS, migraines and MS
  • You feel anxious or depressed
  • You have an autoimmune condition
  • You find it difficult to lose weight

Because CBD stimulates the ECS, it helps to promote homeostasis within the body, reducing the sensation of pain and inhibiting inflammation among many other benefits.

CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS).
