As conscious beings, we must strive to maintain change in a balanced environment.
Recycling and re-using a good start to leading a sustainable lifestyle, but how can you continue to help restore, balance and heal our beautiful Mother Earth. Some common and easy to implement ideas include:
Eliminate single-use plastic:
Replace plastic straws with metal or paper straw. Trade plastic sandwich bags for reusable plasticware or glass containers such as mason jars. Bring your own bags to the grocery store. Avoid using plastic bags in the produce section of the grocery store and purchase reusable mesh produce bags. Use a metal water canteen instead of plastic water bottles. Avoid using beauty products with microbeads.
Be mindful of energy usage:
Turn off lights in rooms you are not in. Switch your light bulbs to energy efficient bulbs. Set home heating or cooling units to eco-mode. Reduce the use of automobiles by taking public transit or biking. Wash laundry in cold water instead of hot.
Only ask for water while dining out if you want it. Avoid laundering single or only a couple items of clothing at a time. Take shorter showers. Turn the faucet off while you brush your teeth.
Consider food consumption and waste:
Make sure your waste goes to the right place (recycling, landfill, compost). Explore at home composting. Consider buying organic when possible. Notice how often you consume animal products and if there is an opportunity to reduce or eliminate consumption (ex: meatless Mondays).
Gaia, or Gaea, is all life.
A Greek deity, she is the personification of the Earth. As Mother Earth she inhabits our planet, offering life and nourishment to us, her children. To the Greeks, she was the ultimate embodiment of raw, maternal power. Before Gaia, there was chaos. A nebulous of stars, dust and atoms waiting to take form. But, it wasn’t until the spirit of Gaia arrived that our Earth began to take its form and structure that we know today. Gaia became the Earth. Birthing the landscapes, oceans and creatures.
The Gaia Theory, the work of chemists James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, suggests that the earth is a living being, self-regulating the elements at all times to help sustain life on this planet. Consider, how the salt in the ocean is never too salty, the oxygen in the atmosphere is never poisonous, the temperature of the planet is not hazardous. All of the Earth’s elements work together in perfect harmony — that is until human intervention.
She asks that we care for her as well as for each other. And for us to truly care for her, we need to awaken to the fact that she is a living, breathing goddess, with a soul, with emotions and with power.
Each day, take a moment to pause and thank her for all that she has done for us and continues to do for us. She provides us with the air we breathe, the water we drink and the soil in which we grow our crops.
We feel that For The Wild mirrors this passion of ours, in a profound and meaningful way.
